Austin Neighborhoods

The central neighborhoods of Austin hold a wide mix of homes and heating and cooling setups. Allandale and Windsor Park are mostly ranch houses with a gas furnace and an AC coil in the attic or a hall closet. Old West Austin, Hyde Park and Travis Heights hold older houses where the ducts and central air were added long after the walls went up. Mueller is mostly row houses, condos and newer homes on the old airport site, many of them with heat pumps.

Retrofit ducts, small returns and tight attic installs come up often in the older areas. Heat pumps, closet air handlers and condensate pumps come up more in the newer ones. The pages below go through each area.

Some repairs show up in every neighborhood on this page. Capacitors, contactors and condenser fan motors fail on outdoor units all over the city, and igniters, flame sensors and defrost controls are just as common from one side of Austin to the other. What changes from one area to the next is the house itself: where the equipment sits, how the ducts were run and whether the heat comes from gas or electricity. A closet air handler in a Mueller condo and an attic furnace in an Allandale ranch house can both stop heating in the same week, for very different reasons, with very different parts involved.
